International Standards Corrosion Effect on Copper:
VDA 675-241  -  a.o.

The test method for the corrosion effect of elastomers on copper provides information on whether the vulcanizate is uncrosslinked or undercrosslinked and/or contains free sulfur.

In this process, the elastomer is stored with an electrolyte copper sheet under a defined load for a specified time at a specified temperature on a glass plate in a heating cabinet.

The analysis is based on the fact that copper reacts with elemental sulfur to form black copper sulfide CuS. The intensity of the black coloration provides a quick qualitative indication of the free sulfur content.

The evaluation is carried out according to a scale that classifies the corrosion phenomena.
