The determination of abrasion resistance using a device with a rotating cylinder drum on elastomers and thermoplastic elastomers provides information on the resistance of the materials to abrasion and thus their wear resistance.

Two methods are available for this purpose. Both methods involve determining the volume loss by the abrasion run of a specimen on an emery sheet of defined attack severity (comparison of the mass of the specimen before and after the abrasion run). While Method A is performed with a non-rotating specimen, Method B uses a rotating specimen. The result can be given for both procedure A and procedure B as a relative volume loss or as an abrasion resistance index.

The resistance to abrasion determined in this way is suitable, among other things, for comparative testing, quality control, verification of compliance with specifications, reference purposes, and research and development.

The results of the abrasion test are not directly comparable with the behavior under operating conditions.
